TOLEWARE
Toleware, or simply tole, refers to items and objects made of tin that have been japanned or lacquered and adorned with a picture or design. Developing in the early 18th century, this technique spread across Europe and America, and trade in these items grew over the decades.
Toleware was developed to imitate Japanese decorative wares, lacquered black with gold detailing thus calling it “Japanned”. The early British pieces were on a black background, often with Asian scenes painted in gold. As the technique became more and more popular, craftsmen delved deeper into the details by adding stenciling, gilding, and brushstrokes of color-and suddenly became beautiful works of art. Toleware was meticulously detailed-from bowls piled high with fruit to floral arrangements in full bloom, idyllic country scenes, and ornamental brushstrokes for added flair.
Eventually, toleware was brought over to America by European immigrants, where it boomed in popularity as a more everyday craft. Today, the remaining relics of toleware are considered highly collectible depending on the age, depicted artwork, and state of condition.
CHINOISERIE
Chinoiserie is a term derived from the French word ‘chinois’, meaning ‘in the Chinese taste’. During the 17th and 18th centuries, trade links with Asia were flourishing which led to large amounts of artifacts from China, Japan and other Asian countries flooding into the European market.
These, together with sketchbooks drawn by Western travellers in the East, cultivated a fascination for the East across Europe resulting in the perennially popular style called Chinoiserie.
Chinoiserie is a style where European craftsmen adopted these Asian designs and created their own whimsical versions and idyllic imageries of the East. Starting around the late 17th century, this style reached its apex in the mid-18th century, emerging as the vogue of its time. It covered a wide range of artistic disciplines including ceramics, furniture, textiles, painting and drawings, interior designs and architecture.
Around the middle of the 19th century Chinoiserie came back into fashion with the Rococo Revival.
